Chapter 18 - Finite & Non Finite verbs

Finite

  • Change (or not) the verb form according to subject
  • Show tenses (present and past)

1. She goes to the town and buys an umbrella
    explain:
  • verb 'go' & 'buy' have changed become goes and buys because the subject 'she' is third form and singular
  • sentence is present tense
2. We call him by phone
    explain:
  • verb 'call' has not changed because the subject 'we' is not third form
  • sentence is present tense
3. we ran to tennis court yesterday
    explain:
  • verb 'ran' is past form of verb run
  • sentence is past tense
          
Non Finite
  • Don't change the verb form (for any subject)
  • Don't show the tenses
  • Three types of NF 
    • Gerunds
    • Participles (past and present)
      • past participle
        • passive voice
        • perfect tense
      • present participle
        • progressive tense
    • Infinitive
4. Brent likes cooking and washing in his house
    likes is main verb (finite) and cooking & washing is non main verb (finite verb)

5. Surfing is great fun
6. They are tired of waiting
7. Irwin likes sitting under the tree
    'is, are and likes' are main verb (finite) because change according to subject         and show tense (present) and surfing, waiting and sitting are gerunds act as         noun (non finite) because don't change form of subject and do not show tense

8. He is kicked by his friend 
    'is' is finite and 'kicked' is passive voice (non finite)

9. Tina has thrown a coin in the wishing bell
10. She had slept in the sleeping bed 
      'had and has' are main verb (finite) and 'thrown and slept' are participles (non finite) and wishing and     sleeping is gerunds (non finite) 

11. Janetta wants to become an architect
      'wants' is finite and to become is infinitive (non finite)

B. Indicate whether the verb is finite (F) or non finite (n). Underline the subject

1. Watching the dog from terrace (NF-Gerund). I decided (F-Past tense) that it would be more fun to join (NF-Infinitive) with the dog
2. Encouraged his latest accident(NF-Participle), Mr. Juno decided (F-Past tense) to increase (NF-Infinitive) his bike-riding efforts
3. Weeping from stress(NF-Gerund), I was (F-Auxiliary) so disappointed that my girlfriend failed (F-Auxiliary) to win (Infinitive) the competition
