Chapter 3 - Common noun and Proper noun

Common noun 

1. Word for something, general

2. Used lower case unless at beginning of sentence

    example

    This is a teacher - common noun, teacher in general not specific

    I love my country - common noun, country in general

Note:

Every common noun to be categorized at least one of types of nouns below

1. Abstract noun, things you can't see or touch (hate, happiness, angry, disappoint)

2. Concrete noun, things you can see or touch (table, dog, bridge)

3. Countable noun, things you can count (apple, person, tree)

4. Uncountable noun, things you can't count (air, music, glass, metal)

5. Collective noun, noun describe group (school, class, jury, band)

6. Compound noun, noun consist of more than one word (paperclip, sister in law, step brother)

7. Gender specific noun, noun specific describe gender male or female (actor, actress, duke, duchess, waiter, waitress)

8. Verbal noun (gerund), noun express action (walking, running, sleeping)


Proper noun

1. Specific or name of something

2. Always capitalized

Example

    This is Miss Anna - Proper noun, specific Miss Anna is a teacher

    I love Indonesia - proper noun, specific Indonesia as a country


Exercise 1 - write common or proper noun next to the noun

1. Boy - common (gender specific)

2. Park - common (concrete)

3. James - proper (from common - concrete)

4. Toyota - proper (from common - car)

5. Sunday - proper (from common - day)

6. School - common (collective)

7. England - proper (from common - country)

Exercise 2 - find common or proper noun

1. This is a red flower (common - compound noun)

2. I know this man (common - gender specific)

3. The Al Qur'an is a holly book (proper - from common holly book)

4. I went to America last night (proper - from common country)

5. I joint the party every weekend (common - abstract)

Exercise 3 - complete the sentence with common or proper noun

1. Christmas is a day of holiday (proper)

2. She lives in Jogjakarta (proper)

3. The boy sing a song (common)

4. I eat Fried chicken (proper)

5. Teacher (common) teaches student (common)
