Definition
word or some words used to refer person, place (substance, state, event), thing (animal and object) and concept (feeling and idea)
Function
1. Subject of Verb
example
He calls me
Explanation
He is subject of verb 'call'
2. Object of Verb
there are 3 types of object: direct object, indirect object and object of preposition as describes below
example
He called a taxi
I sent Dita an email
You arrived at apartment
Explanation
a taxi is direct object of verb 'called' because receive action of verb
an email is direct object because receive action of verb 'sent' and answer the question "what did you send?" and Dita is indirect object because accompany email and answer the question "to whom?"
apartment is object of preposition of 'at'
3. Subject complement
example
She is a doctor
explanation
is (to be) as a linking verb/intransitive verb which not follows by object so a doctor is subject complement because explain subject 'she'
4. Object complement
example
We called the picture on the wall Monalisa
explanation
the picture on the wall is direct object because receive action of verb 'called' and Monalisa is object complement because explain the object
5. Modified by adjective
example
Endo is a handsome man in this class
explanation
a handsome man is subject complement because explain subject 'endo'. its consist of a as determiner, handsome as adjective and man as noun. so the noun 'man' modified by adjective 'handsome'
