Wartsila and it's strategy in renewable energy market
Wartsila focus in innovative technology & lifecycle
solutions (sustainable energy) in Marine and Energy markets
Marine
Decarbonization and Digitalization transformation marine
operation
Main objectives
- Boosting fleet efficiency
- Safety operational
- Environmental sustainability
- Operational performance
Climate and Economic policy
International Maritime Organization emissions target:
- Reduce average CO2 emissions per transport minimum 40% in 2030
- Total annual Green House Gas (GHG) emissions minimum 50% in 2030 and 0% in 2050
To support it European Union (EU) give green bonds which
financial instrument to support project that have positive environmental or
climate benefit.
Vessel owner must support changes 4 sectors below to ensure success of Decarbonization
- A shift fossil fuel to Carbon-free alternative fuels as below
- Ammonia
- Hydrogen
- LNG (Liquid Natural Gas
- Scrubber system to reduce local pollutant
- Hybrid system (combination of battery and conventional diesel engine) to running engine in optimal load, reduce maintenance and increase system performance
- Hull air lubrication, effective to cut fuel consumption and emission up to 10%
- Rotor sails system to cut fuel consumption up to 30%
- New design of Rudder & Propeller system to improve vessel movement and maneuver
ENERGY
Wartsila focus in Energy transition and Flexibility
- Wind and Solar Energy
In the past decade, Wind and Solar energy is cheapest bulk electricity for 2/3 of the world and expected it become cheapest bulk electricity in everywhere in 2030
2. Natural Gas Energy
Natural gas to be consider to replace fossil energy. In developing country number of Natural gas infrastructure have been improved. In global scale flexibility of gas energy is key of the transition.
3. Hydrogen and Synthetic fuels
In power system incorporate of renewable
energy and battery storage can produce green hydrogen that can be used as fuel
to balancing output when cloudy or calm weather and synthesized to facilitate
it handling and use (stored and transported)
Marine and Energy market
During covid period, lots of shipbuilding contract postpone
due to logistical disruption of container ship, gas carrier and bulker sector.
After covid period, vessel market improved in cruise vessel, ferry market and
offshore oil and gas segment, tanker have been improved even it rates still
below pre covid period in 2019. All investors are still wait and see the
opportunity and it getting worst due to Russia and Ukraine war.
Challenging factors
In future together all stakeholders have to discovered and improved
- Flexibility solutions in order to cover intermittent of renewable energy in power system
- Financial bond from government and financial institution to support green energy
- Agreement and Commitment in global scope to reduce emissions and effort to achieve the target
- Pay more intention in developing country since fossil energy is the most and common energy for all citizens
