Aggregates specification for concrete structure according to ASTM C33
It is define the requirement of grading and quality of fine aggregate and coarse aggregate; other than lightweight and heavyweight used in concrete
maximum size and grading of aggregates determine proportion in concrete mixture
Ordering & Specifying information
As purchaser and supplier information below to be state
1. Reference, as C33
2. Quantity, SI as standard
3. Fine aggregate
- restriction or reactive material, see 7.3
- sulfate soundness test, see 8.1
- state limit of material finer than 75 micro mm, see table 1 (limit 3%)
- state limit of coal and lignite, see table 1 (limit 1%)
4. Coarse aggregate
- size permitted, see 10.1 & table 2
- class designation, see 11.1 & table 3
- restriction or reactive material, see 11.2
- sulfate soundness test, table 3
FINE AGGREGATE
General characteristic; natural sand and or manufacture sand
Grading
Sieve analysis limits shall meet specification on table 6.1 but exception as describe below:
- As describe in 6.2 fine aggregate max 45% passing any sieve and retained on the next sieve according to 6.1 and the value of fineness modulus ; 2.3< fineness modulus < 3.
- If fine aggregates failing to meet specification as describe in table point 6.1 or standard in point 6.2, they shall meet specification require in this section that supplier can verify to purchaser that concrete of the class specified made with fine aggregate under monitoring (the fails one) will have relevant properties at least equal to the concrete made from same ingredients with the exception that the reference fine aggregate shall be selected from a source having acceptable performance record in similar concrete construction.
For continuity of shipment, very of fineness modules maximum 0.2 from base fineness modulus.
Deleterious substance
limits of deleterious substance has shown in table 1. Fine aggregate must free from injurious amount of organic impurities and deleteriously reactive with alkali in cement that effect to expansion of mortar
Soundness
five cycles of soundness test shall have average lost of weight maximum 10% when sodium sulfate is used and maximum 15% when magnesium sulfate. Exception as below
- If the result of soundness test failing to meet requirement above, the supplier must demonstrate to the purchaser that the fine aggregate under considering have concrete properties at least the same with concrete made from similar resource so that fine aggregate could be accept.
- fine aggregate under considering that don't have demonstrable service record could be accepted as long as meet requirement Test method C666
COARSE AGGREGATE
General characteristic; shall consist of gravel, crushed gravel, crushed stone, air-cooled blast furnace slag, crushed hydraulic cement concrete
Grading
Grading of coarse aggregate according to table 2.
Limits of Deleterious substance has given in table 3 and its subject to be wetting but must free from deleterious materials that reactive to cement. If the test result shown the deleterious substance exceed limits, supplier must demonstrate to purchaser that concrete properties made from same source from the under considering aggregates have satisfaction result.
Method of sampling and testing describe in point 12
