Subject + Verb

Verb become transitive if 

  • answer the question what or whom (1), (7)
  • If there are 2 objects; direct object and indirect object - Ditransitive verb (2)

Verb become intransitive if 

  • can't answer the question what or whom (3)
  • describe physical behavior or movement (5),(6)
  • prepositional phrase or adverb phrase (4)
Example:

1. Juno is writing a letter - Mark is writing what? a letter. so the verb 'writing' is transitive verb.

2. Ricko is giving me a gift - 'a gift' is direct object because answer question Ricko is giving what? and        'me' is indirect object because receive direct object. the verb giving is ditransitive verb

3. Janetta is walking to school - 'school' is not answer of the question Janetta is walking who/what? but        'where' so walking is intransitive verb 

4. The door opened slowly - 'slowly' is adverb so the verb 'opened' is intransitive verb 

5. I am sitting on chair - 'sitting' is physical behavior so sitting is intransitive verb

6. I am walking - 'walking' is physical movement is intransitive verb

7. I am sitting on exam - 'sitting' mean taking, answer the question what. So sitting is Transitive verb
