Chapter 17 - Action verb & Stative verb

Definition

Action verb describe action by subject. 

Stative verb as below

  • sense of verb: look, sound, smell, taste, touch
  • emotion: like
  • possession: have
  • mental state: know, understand, etc
Forms

Action verb perform in simple (1) and progressive tense (2)
Stative verb perform only in simple tense (3)

Modifier

Action verb modified by adverb (4)
Stative verb modified by adjective (5)

Example

1. Raymond calls his wife - calls is action verb, in simple tense form

2. Mario is working on court - working is action verb, in progressive form

3. Janetta has 1 dog and 1 cat - has is stative verb (possession)

4. James works hard - works is action verb, modified by adverb 'hard'

5. The cake smell great - smell is stative verb, modified by adjective 'great'
